from KSAN to KPIG and now beyond

on friday last while you weren't looking:

75 YEARS AND OUT
MAPLETON COMMUNICATIONS Triple A KPIG/MONTEREY newsman TRAVUS T. HIPP passed away in his sleep overnight,GILROY PATCH reports. Part of the '60s hippie scene, HIPP was a contemporary of WAVY GRAVY and spent time at radio stations KSAN/SAN FRANCISCO and KZAP/SACRAMENTO before he signed up with KFAT/GILROY, which turned into KPIG in 1988.
A colorful character, the 75-year-old (born CHANDLER LAUGHLIN III) did his news reports by phone from his home in SILVER CITY, NV, because he thought CALIFORNIA was going to fall into the ocean. In 2008, he was arrested on-air by NEVADA police for growing 14 marijuana plants.
KPIG DJs were playing songs in his memory FRIDAY, including COUNTRY JOE AND THE FISH's "Fixin' to Die Rag;" the station will do some kind of memorial on MONDAY. Family memorial details have not been divulged.

1984

On April 26, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed CISPA - the Cybersecurity Information Sharing and Protection Act - by a vote of 248-168. CISPA now goes to the Senate.

CISPA gives the government, including military spy agencies like the National Security Agency (NSA), virtually unlimited powers to capture our personal information — medical records, private emails, financial information — all without a warrant or proper oversight.
orwellian eh?

bout sums it up aright

Santorum thinks he’s a bold color and Romney’s a pastel. But the whole Republican field seems ensconced in a black-and-white ’50s diorama. It’s like they’re running for president of Leave It to Beaverland.
